How To Create A Good Opening Sentence For An Essay
Everyone knows that first impressions are extremely important in everything from meeting a person for the first time to writing an essay. The first sentence of your essay will put an idea into the head of the reader if this is going to be a boring essay or something you will be excited about reading. It kind of sets the stage for the rest of the entire article. No pressure, right? That is why it is so important to think twice before creating your opening sentence. Here are some pointers for creating a good opening sentence for an essay.
- The first sentence needs to be attention grabbing. It should try to get your reader to sit up and take notice. Make your reader look twice at the essay. You are trying to open with something that will make your reader continue to read just to see what is coming next.
- Research your topic exhaustively. With tons of research you will find little known facts that you may be able to use for your opening sentence. Look for surprising facts about your topic, or something humorous. Maybe a quote you read hit you hard with its meaning. The more you research, the more interesting information you will find.
- Try to make your first sentence something you found in your research that was little known, or interesting. You are trying to hook the reader into continuing to read your article so find something funny. Anything that you find that falls in that category can be used. The next sentence will elaborate on that and then will tie into your thesis statement. This is the way it is supposed to go so think about the process when you are trying to decide what your first sentence will be.
The first sentence of any essay is just like your first impression you make when you meet someone. Just like you are deciding if this person is worth getting to know, the sentence will help the person decide if the essay is worth reading. Blow your reader out of the water with something so unique, the reader will absolutely have to continue. This sentence is the beginning of the most important paragraph of your essay as well. The last sentence of the introductory paragraph is your thesis statement which the rest of the essay will be built from.
