Writing A Good Exploratory Essay Easily: Tips & Tricks

Exploratory essays are a kind of assignment given to teach students how to explore a subject without taking a side or presenting an argument. Page length can vary from research paper length to a short paper. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you write a good exploratory essay:

  • The Introduction
  • In your introduction you want to be sure to set up any background or context to the subject you have chosen. This simply sets up a kind of map of what you will be discussing in the following paragraphs and should be no more than a few sentences long. Immediately after presenting the background, state the importance of your subject in a matter that compels your reader to continue.

Lastly, state your thesis or question of exploration. Limit this to just one or two sentences pointing out why you are interested in taking on this project, what you intend on finding out and how you expect to do so.

  • The Body Paragraphs
  • Each of your body paragraphs should explain your topic and present one or two examples or explanations to help the reader understand your intent with a particular paragraph. State why you chose to discuss the topic and why the evidence you present is important.

It’s a good idea to first create an outline so you can map out your argument. Use only the most important and most effective topics. Anything that can’t be supported with good evidence shouldn’t make its way into your paper. Stay on topic and order your paragraphs in a way that helps your reader understand the subject of your paper more clearly.

  • The Conclusion
  • Your final paragraph should restate your thoughts on the subject from your introduction as well as review the major content as described throughout your paper. You should also use your conclusion to show the reader how the evidence you provided works best to prove your thesis statement on the topic you chose. Don’t go into too much detail; your body paragraphs should have done most of the work at this point.

Be sure to review your entire exploratory essay to check for small errors in grammar, punctuation or spelling. Any mistakes, no matter how small, could affect your letter grade and make it more difficult for your reader to understand. Editing and proofreading all of your work is essential to becoming a great academic writer.

Last Step

Now that your essay is finished, make sure it sounds interesting.
Ask some people to read it and get their feedback. One little trick to add some interest to an essay is to reword a sentence into a question.
The best place to do this is in the introduction, because you will be supporting your points with evidence in the body paragraphs. that’s where the question will be answered.
