Persuasive Essay Writing: Basic Tips For 4th Graders

Persuasion is an art. If you try to convince someone to change an opinion they hold dearly you have a very high likelihood of failing unless you can put your point across extremely well. One of the main problems with accomplishing this is that the act of persuasion in our everyday lives is not often used as it should be. People may threaten, trick or bribe each other into thinking new things but true persuasion requires convincing.

If you intend to put together a solid persuasive essay, here are a few tips you should keep in mind:

  • A good topic makes a huge difference

  • Many a writer has rushed from topic selection into the meat of the subject because he or she thought this would be the best way to finish quickly. The problem with this is that some topics only reveal their unsuitability after you have already gotten started. You may even end up having to start over and not having enough time to do so. If you are lucky you might find a way to salvage an almost decent paper out of what you have already written.

  • Time management is essential

  • There will seem to be all the time in the world for writing at the start of a project but if you procrastinate you will find that the last few hours of your work are almost impossible to accomplish. Save yourself this embarrassment and start early. Take regular breaks so that you don’t frustrate yourself and you will soon be able to complete essays and other assignments in much less time than you could have in the past.

  • Ask your teacher for a rubric

  • A rubric is a set of rules that shows you how to complete an assignment. For every part of the project it will show you how to achieve full marks so you know how best to focus. Whenever you can access one be sure to do so. If you have a teacher who refuses to give you one, try looking for one online. These may not be as suited to your teacher as one he or she could have given you but they may be able to help you to get better at what you are doing.

  • Bonus tip: Read other writer’s essays

  • If you can get your hands on some very well written essays you can search them for tips that you can make your own.

Last Step

Now that your essay is finished, make sure it sounds interesting.
Ask some people to read it and get their feedback. One little trick to add some interest to an essay is to reword a sentence into a question.
The best place to do this is in the introduction, because you will be supporting your points with evidence in the body paragraphs. that’s where the question will be answered.
